December 2013

WGS MA student Kasie Holmes has been invited to present her paper "Bad Bitch" at the University of Central Florida's First International Women's Issues Conference (IWIC 2014) in February. Her paper was also accepted at the Southeastern Women's Studies Association Conference 2014 in Wilmington, North Carolina March 27th-29th.

WGS graduate certificate student Kiersten Downs shared some exciting news on behalf of the USF Student Veterans Association on the passing of SB 84: Resident Status for Tuition Purposes:

"The University of South Florida Student Veterans Association would like to thank the members of the Florida Senate Education Committee for voting in support of SB 84: Resident Status for Tuition Purposes. As our nation's heroes leave the military and return home, many have eyes towards the future and are beginning their new careers by pursuing a college education. Clearing the Education Committee is a big step towards passing this bill, which will benefit veterans, their families, and the state of Florida.SB 84 and its companion HB 35 will allow veterans to take advantage of Florida's world class university and community college system, without falling further into debt as a result of having to pay out of state tuition. By passing SB 84, members of the Senate Education Committee have made clear that our state has a commitment to our veterans. If we truly intend to be one of the most "veteran friendly" states in the nation, then taking action like these senators have taken today is a necessary part of the equation. The USF SVA looks forward to continuing to work with our state legislators to get this long overdue tribute to veterans written in to law."

November 2013

WGS held its 3rd Annual Affiliate Faculty Member Open House on Oct. 22 to welcome new faculty members Drs. Milton Wendland and David Rubin. We're happy to have them join us as master teachers, colleagues, and scholars.

We also welcomed new department chair Dr. Diane Price-Herndl. But Dr. "DPH" Price-Herndl isn't new around WGS. She's been a key member of the department for four years.

Welcoming our new chair Dr. DPH meant saying goodbye to Dr. Elizabeth Bell, our outgoing chair. She's not going far, however. She's been promoted to Associate Dean of Faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences. Go Dr. Bell! It's great to have friends in high places.

But wait. It gets even better. After four years of joint appointments in WGS and Sociology, our shero Dr. Michelle Hughes Miller will be joining the WGS faculty full time beginning in January.

The Open House showed us it's wonderful to have so many good friends, fans, and supporters all over the campus. As Dr. Bell always says, "In the spirit of our WGS home and community, open house in CMC 202 is every day!" So stop in to see us and say hello.

Fall N.I.T.E. Walk
On November 12th WGS MA students Eileen Dabrowski, Vee Suarez, and Samira "Sam" Obeid joined WGS undergraduates and other USF students, staff, and faculty to make USF safer after dark. Teams gridded off the campus and walked to identify after-dark safety concerns such as burned out lights and unsafe pavement that USF facilities personnel then work hard to address. Participating WGS undergraduate volunteers included: Coral Friesner, Noel Hulse, Ariel Johnston, Katie Maloney, Viveca Martin, Kim Tampas, and Emily Warren.

WGS Students Engage in Social Activism
This Fall, each of the students in Dr. Hughes Miller's online Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies course completed a social activism project on gender-related issues. Some of the students participated in protests and social gatherings to broaden awareness and inclusivity. Others designed materials on such topics as homophobia or violence to educate their peers. Still others used social media to further gender causes, such as advocating for legal changes. This video shares some of the students' experiences.
