USF Women's and Gender Studies: Redressing Injustice Since 1972
We have created Kai and Stevie as a fun way to think about redressing social injustice. Check back from time to time for additional material to celebrate or commemorate events, observe the changes in season, or just have a little fun.
WGS@USF, Dressed for Success:
We’ve been around since 1972—we are the second oldest program in the country. We began offering a Bachelor’s degree (the first in Florida!) in 1987 and the Master’s in 1997.
We are a freestanding department with seven faculty members who teach WGS full time. We also boast 60 affiliate faculty members, representing 25 USF departments and colleges.
We’re also involved. Women’s and Gender Studies professors and students are key players in USF groups for social and political change: Presidential Committees on Title IX, Women’s Status, Issues of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity; Safe Zone Allies and Ally Trainers; PRIDE; Transgender Student Union; Feminist Student Alliance; Triota; and the WGS Graduate Student Organization.
We can claim real success for our students: the last Florida Department of Education survey of graduates gave us a 100% placement rate for both undergraduate and graduate students in jobs or in advanced degree programs. Our students get jobs in public service positions, businesses, and go on to study in Master’s and Ph.D. programs across the country.
Our graduate program invites you to come as you are:
We offer three WGS MA tracks based on a Thesis, Internship, or Coursework, and allow you to plan your coursework to suit your field of interest. We offer graduate coursework in Feminist Research Methods, Feminist Pedagogy, Feminist Theory, Gender Theory, Queer Theory, Transnational Feminisms, Feminist Media and Communication Studies, Body Politics, Politics of Motherhood, Social Justice, and Women’s Health, among others.
You can earn a graduate certificate, too, as an optional minor or cognate. USF offers dozens of certificates from “Africana Studies” and “Latin American & Caribbean Studies” to “Medicine & Gender” and “Nonprofit Management.” WGS has its own graduate certificate, as well.
WGS teaching assistantships and tuition waivers are available. TAs teach, grade, and lead sections of courses such as Introduction to Women’s Studies, Human Sexual Behavior, and Environment & Gender. They get the opportunity to learn to teach both online and face-to-face.

Our undergraduate major invites you to try on different roles:
WGS@USF offers many opportunities for our undergraduates to find the best-fitting future: Do you want to be an activist? To find a way to work within a system for change? To be a scholar of gender or sexualities? We offer you the tools to suit your goals and choices.
We offer undergraduate courses including Women and Social Justice, Feminist Media and Communication Studies, Queer TV and Film, Mixed Race Identities, Women of Color Writers, the Politics of Women’s Health, Intro to LGBTQ Studies, and Transnational Feminisms; we offer you both Feminist and Queer Theory and well as Feminist Research Methods. And we offer one of the most robust internship programs at USF.
You can declare WGS as a first major, as a second major, or as a minor.
